Gene's Update 3-22-10

We were so excited about Gene coming home today. Last night he spiked a fever of just over 100.5. He thinks that is just the resurgence of the leukemia cells. Doctors need to be sure it is not the sign of a serious infection. So today he had a CT Scan, a skin biopsy, and no discharge papers. His doctors are aware of his mental health needs, and are in support of him going home for what Gene calls “3 Day Leave”, but not today. As Dr. Miller said today, donor match or not, a serious fungal infection makes a transplant purely academic. They don’t know or necessarily think it is, but are being cautious. Although I feared something might come in the way of this break, I didn’t really expect it….so it feels like a sucker punch. Maybe tomorrow…..and maybe not. Serious emotional roller coaster ride today, serious disappointment. Sorry, just had to share it. We’ll sleep it off, and see what tomorrow brings.
